MARCH BREAKIt's always nice to do something special with your children or grandchildren during March Break. In our corner of the country, March Break started when the children were dismissed from school on March 10th. My regular readers will know that I watch my grandsons while their parent's work. Therefore, much of their entertainment is left up to me. March Break offers an opportunity for me to do things with the boys that aren't possible when Brandon, aged 4, is in school. As soon as Brandon knew he was going to be off school for a week, he asked me what we were going to do. Like Grandma, he wants to be on the move, doing, seeing and exploring. This year the weather put a damper on things but even rain can't outdo Grandma. I came up with an alternative plan. Since I would not be spending St. Patrick's Day with the boys, I decided on Wednesday that we would have a St. Patrick's Day party. On the way to the boy's house, I stopped at a local store and picked up two green, plastic, bowler hats - Leprechaun hats. Then, I went into the grocery store and picked up a cake mix. When I arrived at the house, I gave the boys their hats. They were delighted. Their eyes sparkled. Their faces glowed. They put the hats on their heads and sat on the couch so I could snap a picture of my two Leprechauns. As soon as that task was completed, we phoned Great Grandma (my Mom) and invited her to come and help decorate the cake and stay for supper. Both boys were delighted when she agreed. Next, Jordan went down for his nap. Brandon pushed a chair up to the counter and we prepared to make the cake. I let him put the cake mix into the bowl and get the milk and eggs out of the refrigerator. Then, it happened. As he scrambled to get back onto the chair, he lost his footing. He put his hand out to save himself. It landed in the mixing bowl and cake mix powder flew in all directions. It was everywhere - on the counter, the floor, the chair and on one small boy. It was on the front of his shirt, in his hair and on his eyelashes. I saw his mouth quiver and tears welled. "Don't cry, Sweetie," I told him. "Crying won't help and as long as you aren't hurt, everything will be fine, ok?" He didn't cry.
