CHRISTMAS IN CANADA

Many childhood memories are of Eaton's where my aunt worked as an elevator operator.

Sears bought out Simpsons some years ago. Sears still send out a Christmas catalogue each year and I find myself once again eagerly anticipating the arrival of the Wish Book. Now, I pour over the pages with my grandsons. I relive my hopes and dreams of a special surprise on Christmas morning with them. I hope the Wish Book is still being published when they have children and grandchildren. It would be a shame to loose this symbol of Christmas tradition that has been handed down in our family.

In 1905, the T. Eaton Company of Canada started a tradition. Santa Claus arrived by wagon at the store in downtown Toronto. Malls and department stories still continue to promote the arrival of Santa Claus.

Christmas has come a long way from the days of pioneer Canada and I often think we have forgotten the true meaning of the season. It is a time of giving and sharing. A time for families. A time to give of ourselves. Sometimes I think those simpler days were better. For though the tree wasn't loaded with gifts, those small log cabins were filled with love.
