Four Mounties Killed

There was no information on how long Constables Schiemann or Gordon had been on the force, but reports did say that Constable Schiemann was from Petrolia, Ontario and Constable Gordon came from Edmonton. Constable Myrol's mother lashed out at the "liberal minded" justice system that allowed Roszko to flourish. She demanded that Prime Minister Paul Martin toughen laws to curb drug abuse and violence and give police the power to ensure public safety. The murder of the four Mounties is unprecedented in modern Canadian history. RCMP Assistant Commissioner, Bill Sweeney, stated: "You'd have to go back to 1885, to the Northwest Rebellion, to have a loss of this magnitude. It's devastating." Devastating indeed, Mr. Sweeney. Where are the laws that protect our police officers? In Canada the murder of a police officer is punishable by death, yet the law is never put into effect. When police officers are murdered in the line of duty, leaving behind wives, children, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and beloved friends, what happens to the guilty party? He is given ten or twelve years in prison and then released after seven. In my opinion, Constable Myrol's mother is right to demand that the Martin government be held accountable for the lack of power of police and the courts in Canada. Crimes of this nature are escalating while politicians sit in their offices and make laws that cannot be enforced. Criminals in Canada know that whatever they do will only bring what amounts to a slap on the wrist. It's time for Canada to get tough, hand out stiffer sentences and, when police officers are murdered, put the capital punishment law to good use. To the Canadian people: It's time to step up to the plate and insist our justice system be overhauled. Criminals need to know a zero tolerance attitude will be implemented. You do the crime, you do the time. It's time to stand up and be counted. We need to weed out crime so our children and grandchildren will be able to walk down the street without the fear of being gunned down for no other reason than someone wants a thrill. I appeal to you. Write Prime Minister Paul Martin and demand that he and his cronies give both police officers and the courts the power to stomp out crime. The four Mounties died needlessly. Roszko should have been put away a long time ago and the keys thrown away. My deepest
