'The Associates' a Welcome Sight to CTV's Lineup

The series starts off with a bang. Literally...when Mitch Barnsworth (Gabriel Hogan) runs into Robyn Parsons (Tamara Hickey) with his car. Even more of a bang is what pops out of her mouth...something you don’t usually hear on primetime television.

Gabriel Hogan is undoubtedly the most recognizable of the five young associates. He has two other television series to his credit (‘Traders’ and Peter Benchley’s ‘Amazon’), a few films (Blue City Slammers, Red Scorpion 2, and Love and Death on Long Island), and a number of made-for-TV works (The Halfback of Notre Dame, Elvis Meets Nixon, Peacekeepers, and Flood: A River’s Rampage), as well as some notable guest appearances in ‘Power Play’ (as bad boyd Bobby Gunn) and ‘La Femme Nikita’ (as Nikita’s friend, Jamey). He is also the son of Canadian actors Michael and Susan Hogan. On ‘The Associates’, he plays Mitch Barnsworth, the nephew of Terence Barnsworth, one of the firm’s senior partners. He was exiled from their London office because he had an affair with a woman who happened to be the wife of one of their biggest clients. The character has a bit of an ego, but so far, he could fall on either side of the ‘good guy / bad guy’ line.

Hogan isn’t the only talent among the young stars, though he is definitely the most well known. Demore Barnes is making his television drama debut with ‘The Associates’, although he is the former co-host of CBC’s ‘Street Cents’, and had bit parts in the Canadian telemovies White Lies and If You Believe. He plays Benjamin Hardaway, a Duke graduate completely lacking in humanity if the opening episodes are any indication. Shaun Benson comes from a theatre history, doing shows like Waiting for Lewis. Here he plays Jonah Gleason, a lawyer from a Catholic / Jewish background who is a nice guy, but isn’t beyond stepping on the little guy to get what he wants from life, and from the law. Tamara Hickey’s first regular television gig is ‘The Associates’, but she has also done a number of small made-for-TV movies, including ‘Bad As I Wanna Be: The Dennis Rodman Story’. On ‘The Associates’, she is Robyn Parsons, a 23-yr-old transplant from the firm’s Texas branch. Jennie Raymond is no stranger to television, or to ‘The Associates’ co-star Gabriel Hogan, with whom she co-starred in the made-for-television movie Pit Pony, and even went on to star in the series based on the movie (sans Hogan), and also the movie Love and Death on Long Island. On ‘The Associates’, she is Amy Kassan, a millionaire’s daughter fast on her way to becoming the firm’s ice queen.
