Global's Fall Line-Up: Canadian Productions

Canwest Global will be adding an amazingly large number of new shows to it's fall line-up this year -- seventeen to be precise. They'll also be switching a few around with CTV, possibly hoping to draw more viewers. While CTV caters to an older audience, Global tends to cater to a more specific 18-49 audience. The first of these switches will be a shock to some daytime viewers. Originally aired by CTV, James E. Reilly's quirky new soap 'Passions' will be trading places with 'General Hospital' this fall, and moving to Global. The downside of this? Global is only available to part of the country, so if you're not in a Global-friendly area, you'll need to get your Harmony-fix through your NBC affiliate.

Global's fall line-up features nine new Canadian shows.

CANADIAN PRODUCTIONS

BIG SOUND: Remember HBO's hit 'The Larry Sanders Show'? Well, Canada is going to try something like that. 'Big Sound' will focus on the quirks of the music world, much like 'The Newsroom' centered around the quirks of the newsroom. The central character is a Vancouver talent agent having a mid-life crisis. Some famous Canadian musicians already set to make cameos are Bryan Adams and the Barenaked Ladies. The 22-episode series is based in Vancouver, and produced by David Steinberg.

BLACKFLY: This historical satire features comedian Ron James, and is based in Halifax. Thirteen half-hour episodes will star James as an 18th century 'hero'.

BLUE MURDER: Maria Del Mar (formerly of 'Street Legal' and 'TekWar') will be starring in this upcoming Toronto cop drama, where the cops are on the track of politically based crimes. Think of 'The West Wing' meets 'Law & Order'. This series isn't scheduled to start until January, and has been given a 13-episode commitment. The show is produced by Laszlo Barna.

BOB & MARGARET: There will be a new twist to this animated comedy about an English couple (dentist Bob and his wife Margaret) -- they're migrating to Mississauga, Ontario. The series is based in Toronto, and produced by Nelvana (you know, the ony with the polar bear). There are 22 episodes on the slate for this season.

CODE NAME: ETERNITY: Apparently the show has been delayed. Who knows if it will actually air this year -- CN:E has been on the fall schedule three years in a row now. The show follows the romance of an earthling named Laura (Ingrid Kavelaars) and an alien named Ethaniel ('Mystery Alaska's Cameron Bancroft). The two are on the run from a murder they didn't commit, but have been framed for.
