The major star of the season is a legal drama from Alyson Feltes, a former legal associate and Traders alum. No, it's not Ally McBeal, it's not Street Legal, and it's not L.A. Law. It promises to be a bit of all three. The Associates is a Toronto-based drama which will center around the lives of five lawyers in their twenties. Like America's Law & Order and CBC's DaVinci's Inquest, many of the scripts will include cases well-known to Canadians, altered suitably to fit the television format. It's prime seller at this point isn't its plot base, but the presence of quickly-rising star Gabriel Hogan, who has recently finished a double-duty job at two recently canceled shows, Peter Benchley's Amazon (as Falconer John) and Global's Traders (as Ian Farnham).
The other Canadian product coming to CTV this fall will remind many of Global's Bob & Margaret, or FOX's The Simpsons and King of the Hill -- an animated comedy intended for adults. Canadian fans will soon recognize the voice talents behind the faces as Eugene Levy, Catharine O'Hara, and Andrea Martin, all formerly of SCTV. Both Committed and The Associates will premiere in January. Originally slated for this season was SteelString, a new series for Paul Gross, who is best known to television viewers as Benton Fraser from the two failed Due South shows. Unfortunately for television fans, (but fortunately for stage fans), Paul Gross has been enjoying a successful run as Hamlet on the Stratford stage, so it will be another year before his private eye series hits the air. Mid-season will see another animated show, this time a drama, launched on the networks, called D'Myna Leagues, about a flock of baseball-crazy birds, inspired by the writings of W.P. Kinsella. As always, the schedule will contain a number of American imports. The most notable of these imports is the hit HBO series The Sopranos, which centers around a mob family. It will be edited for CTV viewers, but not so much because of the violence or the language -- the show will have to be trimmed down for time, because in it's original airings, there are no commercials.
