Springtime Season Brings Cancellation Announcements

There have been a number of holes left in the Canadian schedules after various shows were cancelled in the 1999/2000 season. Among the shows (both American and Canadian) to have been cancelled this season, we include:

10/25/1999: Harsh Realm. The cancellation of this Chris Carter series after only 3 episodes was no surprise, except to Chris Carter. Considered by many to be too violent for television, the show featured well-known Canadian actor Scott Bairstow. Ryan Caulfield, another FOX/Global drama about a teenage cop, was cancelled this same day.

01/06/2000: Manchester Prep. This show, based on the hit teen film Cruel Intentions, never aired a single episode. The hype hurt, rather than helped in this case. Footage from the show will be spliced together to create a 'movie', to be released within the year.

12/30/1999: Ally. This half-hour collection of footage and out-takes from David E. Kelley's hit primetime soap Ally McBeal aired it's last episode on December 28.

2/11/2000: Nothing Too Good for a Cowboy. This period comedy/romance, based on three books by Richmond P. Hobson, Jr., survived two seasons on CBC before falling victim to Low Ratings Syndrome.

3/23/2000: Emily of New Moon. This hour-long period drama, based on the 'Emily' books by author L.M. Montgomery, never caught on the way that Road to Avonlea (also based very loosely on works by L.M. Montgomery) did.

5/3/2000: Party of Five. Aired on FOX and Global, this long-running sudser about the Salinger siblings aired it's series finale earlier this month. This series helped launch the careers of up-and-comers like Scott Wolf, and DID launch the career of singer/actress Jennifer Love Hewitt and Canadian actress Neve Campbell. The spin-off, Time of Your Life starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, was also canned.

5/4/2000: Peter Benchley's Amazon. The American distributor cancelled the show, but Alliance-Atlantis is checking out their other options. While the show is unlikely to succeed, it wouldn't be the first American/Canadian show where the American companies backed out and Canada found someone else to step in (hence the Due South spin-off).

5/6/2000: La Femme Nikita. This show, about a female spy who would sell her own mother for an assignment but has a heart of gold underneath her brusque exterior, finally fizzled out. Don't look for a reunion show in the future -- the cast and crew have already moved on.

5/17/2000: Beverly Hills, 90210. After ten years on the air, this long running teen-oriented soap on FOX (and Global) went off the air with a wedding for Donna and David, and a return for Valerie and Andrea. Now and Again. Often hailed as one of the biggest hits of the season, this show, with Eric Close starring as a genetically engineered 'machine', aired it's final episode on May 19 on CTV.
