P.R. is the latest CBC series to come to the airwaves from Road to Avonlea's Sullivan Entertainment. The half-hour sitcom is slated to air 13 episodes beginning next season, and is currently being shot in Toronto and Scarborough (where Sullivan Entertainment makes Wind at my Back). P.R. is Sullivan Entertainment's first attempt at producing a contemporary series.
The show centers around a public relations firm that handles the entertainment business, but it's not intended to be a serious look at publicists and their craft. It's not too far from another Canadian sitcom of the past, The Newsroom, which was a look at the workings of a small station, itself a more humorous approach to CTV's primetime sudser E.N.G. The agency is owned by one Alexandra Reed (Diane Flacks), along with her partner, Jill Hayes (Ellie Harvie). Black-clad office manager Deidre (Fiona Reid) virtually runs the office, while office assistant Marci (Julie Paton) scurries around trying to please everyone. Alex's own personal thorn in her side is accountant Benny (Michael Beaver). Other cast members include Alan C. Peterson (of Noroc and New Blood) and Jonathan Rannells (of Power Play). Each episode will have them attacking a new brand of unusual client, and finding just the right niche to suit each spokesperson. It's to be expected that as a CBC product, the show will be slightly darker than it's American counterparts, but it's unlikely it will be as dark as the CBC product DaVinci's Inquest, or even the defunct Street Legal. What you can expect is flash and glamor, a high-price look for a high-grade office. P.R. ceased production after only four episodes to allow Flacks some time off, but is going to being re-shooting this month. Go To Page: 1
