"My Life as a Dog" was a short-lived Canadian series that ran from 1996 to 1997. Based on the novel Mitt Liv som Hund, by Swedish author Reidar Jönsson, and the 1985 film of the same name, "My Life as a Dog" was an interesting 22-episode half-hour look at the trials and tribulations of small town life for a boy after his mother dies, and he is sent to live with his mother's twin brother.

Michael Yarmush played the central character of Eric, the young boy who is sent to Gimli, Manitoba, to live with the uncle he's never met. The series follows his adventures in his friendships with AJ and Sam, his developing relationship with uncle Johnny (Callum Keith Rennie) and aunt Zoey (Jennifer Clement), and his journey from the realm of childhood into the burgeoning realm of adulthood.

"My Life as a Dog" is a Canadian-oriented, suitable-for-children series that, style-wise, resembles predecessor "Jake & the Kid" and later Canadian series "Little Men", although set in a more contemporary time. Like most shows set-in-Canada, the setting is a uniquely Canadian landscape, with much attention on the scenery, in particular the wintertime look.

The first series to be produced in Manitoba, "My Life as a Dog" was apparently never intended to run more than 22 weeks. A wonderful look at a year in the life of a young boy trying to learn to deal with the loss of his mother and the complete change his life underwent, the most long-surviving legacy of the show is the Gemini Award won by Callum Keith Rennie (Johnny Johansson).

Since the show ended, Yarmush has continued to add credit after credit to his career, Rennie has gone on to the "Due South" follow-up series and film roles, and Clement has gone on to do both films and made-for-television movies.
