Canadian Airwaves Lose 4 Tanked Shows

November isn't even over, but there have already been seven casualties in this year's TV line-up. Most of the cancellations came as no surprise to viewers, but some might have been a little premature. Four of the seven cancelled shows ("The Mike O'Malley Show", "Harsh Realm", "Ryan Caulfield: Year One", "Manchester Prep") were set to air in Canada on either CTV (BCTV) or Global.

The Mike O'Malley Show (9/21/1999 - 9/30/1999): Cancelled September 30 after only two episodes, this NBC sitcom (which also aired on BCTV) didn't have enough time to even have a chance. Centered around the life of a thirty-something bachelor facing life and relationships (Mike O'Malley, of course) in the nineties, the show was well-written, had some good comedic twists, and was probably the funniest new sitcom on the air this year. Unfortunately, the show performed extremely poorly in the ratings, and has the distinction of being the first show in the 1999 season to be cancelled outright.

Harsh Realm (10/8/1999 - 10/26/1999): One of two FOX shows to get the boot in late October ("Ryan Caulfield: Year One"), "Harsh Realm" had trouble since the beginning. Reportedly "Harsh Realm" experienced difficulties in the violence of the storyline. There was a good possibility of changes, but the show went on the air as is, and many viewers were surprised by the violence and "mature content" of this Canadian-made series from "The X Files" creator Chris Carter. Press reports have Carter blaming Doug Herzog for cancelling his series without giving it a fair chance. Despite the best efforts of fans, this show looks to be tanked...permanently.

Ryan Caulfield: Year One (10/15/1999 - 10/26/1999): If anyone saw this turkey, they're not admitting it. The cancellation of both HR and RC:YO has left a two-hour whole in the Friday night schedule for FOX and Global. RC:YO was another attempt to cash in on the legions of cop show lovers out there, but unfortunately, like a number of other new FOX additions, the show failed to draw the desired audience. If there ARE fans of the show out there, or anyone mounting a rescue effort, they're keeping awfully quiet.

Manchester Prep (*RIP*): This 13-episode television version of the recent cult hit "Cruel Intentions" never even made it on the air. Apparently the show explored everything from teen sex to incest to pseudo-bestiality, but since it never made it on the air, no one is the wiser. Probably a good suggestion -- the age group likely to watch a show like MP is probably not the age group that should be watching storylines like that.
