CBC's 'White Lies'

The cast was talented and catchy, but badly chosen. Once again, the typical stereotype about racists is upheld, in that all concerned "white power" activists are fair-haired and fair-skinned. The exception is Erina (the talented Tanya Allen), who ends up, half way through the movie, realising that maybe NIM isn't all it was cracked up to be, and maybe she doesn't want to be quite as involved. The group ends up tossing her to the wolves.

While this movie is definitely a good example of Canadian film-making, the movie itself is not the kind of movie that one sits down to watch with a bowl of popcorn. The plot is empty and full of holes. The characters are poorly developed and complete stereotypes. There is no factual basis to much of the movie's content. All this movie really manages to do is portray anti-racists in the same negative light as racists, and confirm that in this day and age of political correctness, one should never utter the words "Merry Christmas" to another for fear of being called a racist.
