Summer Re-Runs: What's Hot, and What's Not

The general rule of summer television is "re-run central." All summer long, Canadians wanting to watch television have to settle for the same old re-runs that plague them during holidays, hiatuses, and pre-emption periods.

Of course, even in re-run land, there are some hot shows to watch. In particular, Canada's own hour-long dramas, CTV's "Power Play" and CBC's "Da Vinci's Inquest." Each show only ran 13 original episodes, but both have been enjoying summer re-runs before returning with an all-new season in the fall. This gives fans who missed one or more episodes the first time around the chance to catch up on what they missed.

Not all the series being run right now are re-runs, at least not for Canadians. Summer time is when the new episodes of the US/Canadian series "La Femme Nikita" air on CTV. Like it or hate it, it's one of the few shows that airs new episodes all summer long. Another show Canadians can enjoy right now is the American "Diagnosis Murder." Although dropped by the network in the fall because it wasn't pulling in the viewers, CTV is airing what, in the US, would be repeats of the show Monday nights at 10:00 pm, and whenever else they fit into the schedule. (Personally, I'm waiting anxiously for the two-parter, "Trash TV".)

It's not just series that are being re-run over the summer months. All summer long, CTV and CBC re-play movies that have aired before. Maybe you missed them, maybe there was something else on, or maybe you just didn't care, but they're re-airing right now.

This Saturday (August 14) on CBC, they're re-airing a movie that first aired in March of 1998 -- "White Lies," starring Sarah Polley, Jonathan Scarfe, and Tanya Allen. This movie was one of the most controversial film products in recent history, telling the tale of a mildly racist white girl from a middle/upper class existance who suddenly found herself being an active member of a local hate group. It made national headlines with its subject matter. (Unfortunately, it's not the best movie CBC has ever made.)

For those sick of summer re-runs, there is less than six weeks left until the new shows of the fall start airing.
