American Imports for CTV's Fall Line-Up
Passions (NBC): This much lauded soap comes from former "Days of Our Lives" guru James E. Reilly, and will be airing on CTV in the spot formerly occupied by "Another World'. It follows the lives and loves and four core families in a New England town called Harmony. For more information, visit Dustin's Passions page (http://dustin.interspeed.net/passions/). New US Imports: Ally (from FOX): This is sort of a non-show, constructed entirely of unused and previous clips from various episodes of "Ally McBeal". It's going to follow the format of the half-hour sitcom, and will assumably be aired the same night as "Ally McBeal". The half-hour show will focus on the comedic aspects of the show rather than the dramatic storylines occasionally written in. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (from NBC): Following close on the heels of Benjamin Bratt's exodus from "Law & Order" (and his replacement by Jesse L. Martin, "Ally McBeal"'s Dr. Greg Butters) is the news that, come fall, the networks will have a NEW L&O to deal with. L&O:SPU will focus on the NYPD's sex crimes unit. Nothing definite yet on casting, but Richard Belzer (John Munch from the cancelled "Homicide: Life on the Streets") is rumored to be one of the actors being considered for a role. Producers include Ted Kotcheff and Robert Palm. Manchester Prep (from FOX): Based on the teen flick "Cruel Intentions" (in turn based on the movie "Dangerous Liaisons"), MP will star Canadian actor Robin Dunne (most recently of "Little Men") as Sebastian Valmont, a bored, sometimes cruel, young playboy. MP also stars Californian Sarah Thompson in the role of Annette Hargrove (played in the movie by Reese Witherspoon, who wed "Cruel Intentions" co-star Ryan Philippe on Saturday), and Amy Adams takes over the role of Kathryn Merteuil (played in the film by daytime Emmy winner Sarah Michelle Gellar). Oh Grow Up (from ABC): Comedy? Drama? Who knows. This appears to be "Two Guys, A Girl, and a Pizza Place" for the over-25 crowd. Starring David Alan Basche, John Ducey ("Deep Impact", "High School High"), and Stephen Dunham ("The Mummy"), the series centers around three men in their late twenties, early thirties, who share an apartment -- have, in fact, since they were in the same college fraternity. Once and Again (from ABC): This hour-long drama from the creators of "thirtysomething" chronicles the love lives of newly single Lilly Manning (Sela Ward) and Rick Samler (Bill Campbell). They single, they've got kids, they've got baggage, and once the show begins, they've got love as well -- with each other. The series also stars Julia Whalen and Meredith Deane as Lilly's children, Grace and Zoe, and Shane West and Evan Rachel Wood as Rick's children, Eli and Jessie. Other co-stars include Harley Jane Kozak, Marin Hinkle, and Jeffrey Nordling. O&A has six weeks to prove itself -- if it does, it will finish out the season, but if it doesn't, it's gone.
