G8 Summit - The Africa Action PlanAs for the African leaders who attended the Summit, they are committed to making NEPAD a keystone of the African Union (AU). Meant to be a regional power bloc along the same lines as the European Union, the AU replaces the former Organization of African Unity. A commitment to “promoting democratic principles, good government and popular participation and good governance” is outlined in the Constitutive Act of the AU. However, it remains to be seen whether the organization can retain the democratic goals outlined in its Constitution and NEPAD when countries such as Libya are members. It also remains to be seen whether the African people will ultimately support NEPAD, and whether western leaders will follow through on the glowing promises outlined in the Africa Action Plan.
