Another good question is why someone would want the job at this point. It is very unclear what direction the Alliance Party will take over the next few years. Will the party continue to uphold the principles of the original Reform Party, as Stockwell Day attempted to do? Will the "unite the right" talks go forward? In the latter case, the new leader's position will probably be temporary, until a future leadership race is held to elect the leader of the merged parties. (Joe Clark will probably also have been forced out of his role as PC leader by that point.) Instead of reviving his political future, Stockwell Day may only have succeeded in buying himself a bit more time.
