Paula: It also says on your bio that you're working on a screenplay for Affair with the Moon. Is that true?
David: Oh, that. Yes it is. I got hired to write that one as well. I don't talk about that because I hate the book so much. Paula: I'm surprised that you'd agree to do it. David: You know what - it's stupid. It's like going back with an old girlfriend, that you know you're incompatible with, and that you don't even very much, but for some reason you've got unfinished business. I consented to write the screenplay - I know this sounds insane - but I consented to write the screenplay because I wanted to get it right, because I've always believed that there was a fabulous story there, and that I blew it. I didn't have the technique and I didn't have the talent maybe to pull it off, but I was given this unbelievable story and I blew it. And about three years ago I was walking down the street and I thought, "I know what's wrong with An Affair with the Moon." What's wrong with Affair with the Moon, is that I should have told the story from the standpoint of the guy who did the killing. That way, I would have had a Canadian Psycho, and also I'm not good about writing about other characters, I'm only good for writing from inside the experience. Whether it's me or whether it's Darius, I can only write the world from the inside, the guy in the center of the story. But anyways, they called me up and I thought, "You know what, I know how to do this now, which is, tell the story from the guy and have your own version of a Canadian Psycho." And so that's what I did, and I wrote it for them, and they hated it. [laughter] Paula: Oh, so they're the ones who hated it this time! David: Yeah, and I liked it. My second ex-wife who's the actress Maggie Huculak [the voice behind the English version of the History of Canada series] , I gave it to her. She's a wizard actor and she's very tough and I said, "Read it," and she said, "You've got it. This time you really, really got it." I really trust her and so I handed it to Alliance and they said "Oh Christ! Nobody would ever, ever want to go to this movie!" I think they're wrong - I think I actually nailed it but they absolutely hated it. But they paid me in full for it - I don't think they were happy about it, but then they paid me completely for it and then I think they just threw it in the wastepaper basket . But you know, that's it - I've sworn off that. I'm never going back to that story again. For some reason, that's hoaxed. It's just like, "Don't try to figure it out anymore, just leave it alone."
