David: It's the strangest thing you know -- I read the book on the train to Ottawa and I have to tell you, I read the whole thing just on the train ride because it is a very short novel, and when I finished I put it down and I thought, "Fuck, is that ever great!" [both of us laughing] But it's not about that; it's only because, literally of the architecture. You know, when you write a book, it's 250 pages; it's like building a 50 floor building and there is almost invariably some structural flaw at some point, and as the writer you kind of have a feeling where it is and you sort of hope if you look away and then look back, it will be gone the next time you read the book. But, what happens is, it doesn't really work that way, and in fact the more conscious you become of where these particular errors are. There are small structural errors in all of my earlier books, and my body, when I am re-reading them, starts to tighten in apprehension as I approach them because I keep hoping, "Oh, it's not going to happen; it's not going to happen; somehow the book will have solved itself overnight," and then I get to it and I have that physical sensation in my body and I go, "Fuck! There it is!" This is the only book that I have read all the way though and thought, "Ah, I'm home free!"
