A Nose for Children's Fiction

Mar 2, 2001 - © Paula E. Kirman

person who wants to write?

Richard: Easy answer to this one. READ. Keep reading. Read all kinds of different things. Don't worry about writing yet -- that will come. Fill your mind with words.

Paula: The Nose from Jupiter was your first novel for kids -- what made you decide to go ahead and write a novel?

Richard: Actually, I had written 2 adult novels before The Nose From Jupiter. The hardest part with that book was thinning down the plot to accommodate a shorter format. A very useful idea, because it forced me to focus on the through line of the book, and made it better and more streamlined. My editor at Tundra helped enormously.
