Empire of Dust

May 31, 2003 - © Paula E. Kirman

"When I wrote the book, I felt that my scholarly colleagues in history were not being as interesting as they could be, and they often wrote in a less than engaging style. So I tried to be revealing as well as interesting and artful wherever possible."

While it is obvious that the book will be a logical choice in history classrooms studying Prairie history, Empire of Dust also has practical applications for all Prairie readers. "Albertans don't know their own history. This disaster was the worst farm abandonment in Canadian history," Jones explains.

"It is a story of frothy boosterism that gets people into the drought region, lightening expansion, and utter miscalculation - of drought, destitution, and depopulation."

Published in a different form in the Spring 2003 issue of Prairie Books Now.
