What's Going On?

What's Going On?

I was watching TV over the weekend - I know, I know, I shouldn't - but I did and it was quite a disturbing time. I watched a couple of war movies, and some news programs, that of course covered some of the unrest around the world. And then the Attack on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the assumed attempt on the White House or Capitol building. How will Canada react? I'm not sure, even after watching hours and hours of TV, listening to radio, and talking with people from all walks of life.

Yesterday and even today, Canadian citizens and politicians are unsure of what they want to commit to the fight against terrorism that the US is waging. I have heard the gamut of responses, from doing nothing to help, to doing everything possible. The world is finally coming to grips with terrorists and what they are capable of in this modern world of the west.

What does Canada do? What does the United States do? Why has this happened? What do the democracies of the world do? No one knows.

Canada has publicly said that it will help the United States in any way possible - As long as they can define a clear target of aggression. Well that's going to be a very difficult proposition owing to the fact that terrorists are always on the move and are difficult to pin down. They have the ability to move between countries that have undefined or unguarded borders, countries that harbor terrorists, and a people that condone the terrorists creed of 'death to the west'.

In my opinion the United States will eventually move into a country in the mid-east, whether it is Pakistan or another country over there within striking distance, that will allow their troops to enter. They will set up a major base of operations from which they can send out special anti-terrorist groups made up of allied special forces troops. The Army Rangers, Navy Seals, Green Berets, the Delta Force and whatever special forces the allies of Canada, Britain, France, Russia, and Germany have.
These troops will move into the area of operations and give fire direction control to offshore missile batteries, and or air bases in a neighboring country for surgical strikes. They will also have the responsibility of carrying on any ground fire operations where air or missile support is not feasible.

Another base of operations will have to be set up in South America. Some South American countries have for years used terrorist or 'Death Squads' to keep the peace or force their ideals on the population. Will these groups also be
