Do we NEED them?

Do we REALLY need them?

I was talking to a couple of people last week about Canada and it's military and I was first asked about what I and others I know thought about the incident in Somalia/Rhawanda. I told him that most of the people I know from Canada knew very little about it, or nothing at all. Do YOU Know? And those that did know of it, had pretty much put it behind them. His wife shortly stated that we, meaning Canadians, aren't like that, meaning a warlike people. This of course got me thinking.

Where in this world today would a country be without a military presence? I believe that it would be occupied by another country rather quickly. Canada of course being as close to the United States as it is doesn't need a large military presence, it only needs a military to keep Russia and the United States from swallowing it up without consequence, and to also help in the many peace keeping efforts going on around the world today.

Your country has to have a well trained, combat ready, and respected military. War is a terrible way to solve problems and burying your countrymen is painful, but the alternative is to live under a regime not of your choice.

When another country calls for help, help to keep from being over-run, help to keep it's own government from toppling, or help to keep it's citizenry from being slaughtered and imprisoned, are we to keep silent? I think not. As a nation formed from war, defended by a brave military, and given life by the thousands that have died for us, we owe the world our might and our
