Canadian Military at WarA country roughly the size of the United States, but with only thirty million people. Canada has always been there with men and aid when the world community calls. Unknown to many is the extent to which the Canadian Armed Forces have contributed to the wars of many other nations. Canadians have served in all the major wars, WWI, WWII, Korea, S. Vietnam, and peacekeeping in Kosovo. The Canadian Military fought from Sicily to Northern Italy, Eastern Europe into the Netherlands. Many Canadians have died and many more have been wounded in wars of other nations and much of the world is unaware of the fact. While researching this article, I also was introduced to many things I hadn't imagined that Canada has done to help the worlds nations protect themselves from the facists and dictators of Germany, Italy, and others. Following are some numbers I have collected from many Canadian people that keep track of these things. From Steve Martin, Chapter President Canadian POW*MIA Information Centre (Michael (Bat) Masterson Chapter Toronto, Ontario. ; These totals INCLUDE New Foundlands contribution as well(NFLD didn't become a Province of Canada until 1948). World War One (1914-18) = 68,270 World War Two (1939-45) = 45,615 Korea (1950-53) = 516 South African War and Nile Expedition = 283 From Tracey Arial, Writer 7353 Dunver Crescent, Verdun, Quebec H4H 2H6 http://home.earthlink.net/~tarial; WWII Merchant Seamen = 1,100; Peacekeeping includes Bosnia and Vietnam (1950- 95) = 103; For a total of 115,887 killed. This doesn't include the huge number of wounded, nor the number that served with honor. Canadians are a proud and patriotic people. They love their country and they are proud that the rest of the world thinks of them as friendly, soft spoken, and easy going. They have also earned a reputation for strength, perseverence and bravery in combat. November, 1942, 2000 Canadian men and two nursing sisters were deployed to Hong Kong. Over 500 died as result of the conflict or as prisoners of war. Canada has been involved in all aspects of world affairs, and it's military is on par with any on earth. It's modern weapons and well trained personnel will help guide it into the 21st Century and beyond. With alliances in NATO and it's close ties to Britain, the Commonwealth, and the United States, she will be a force to be reckoned with. In future articles I will cover this bravery, specific battles, the Canadian Military today, and where they plan to be in the future.
