The Beauty of the Night© Mary M. Award
There's nothing like walking at night when snow is gently falling and the world is bright from the reflections of the city lights on the snow. It was calm. Not many people were out because of the weather. Few cars were on the road. Meeko and I walked across the street and down the hill into the park. A small stream runs along the edge of the park. As we got close, we could hear the trickle of the water as it made it's way over the rocks and stones. In places, the stream was frozen. In the distance, I heard the sound of an owl's hoot. I'm not sure what kind it was, as I don't know enough about owl's calls to tell the difference. That was delightful. I haven't heard an owl's call in quite sometime. I do know that we have owls living in the area, but as they are nocturnal (night) creatures, I don't often have the chance to know that they're on the wing. I wondered what this fellow was up to. (I guess I shouldn't call him a fellow. As far as I know, you can't tell whether an owl is male or female by its call.) Was he out looking for his nightly meal, or just enjoying the snow as the tiny flakes floated to the ground? Meeko and I continued on our way. Things were very quiet and it seemed that the entire world was at peace. The snow lay before us, untouched. It was as if everyone had disappeared from the world. My thoughts reflected on how tiny we are in the scheme of things in the universe. Meeko took time to roll in the snow, which is a usual thing for him. After all, he's a northern breed. He poked his nose into the frosty piles, shook his head and sneezed. He looked so comical, with snow all over his face, that I laughed out loud. When Meeko was done playing, we walked along the lane that leads to the street about a block from our house. Meeko trotted ahead on his leash, enjoying the coolness. I followed behind, enjoying the snow and the beauty of the night.
