An Early Morning Walk with Meeko

Meeko and I headed down to the canal (long, narrow, body of water) a short walk from the house. He sniffed at the snow, marked his territory and was generally having a lot of fun. We walked the path along the canal into a wooded area. Several bright red cardinals sat in the trees there, singing us a symphony. Their red feathers were beautiful against the backdrop of snow. Meeko decided that he wanted to have more fun. He laid down, rolled onto his back, and wiggled around in the snow. Then, he was on his feet and shaking. Snow flew everywhere. Yes, right into my face. He took off running. The temperature was around freezing (32 F. or 1C). There was a little wind, but nothing like the biting blasts of last night. I was enjoying the scenery, when Meeko took off. He hit the end of his 20 foot leash, jerking me forward. Yes, he'd seen another dog. One that is not friendly towards us. So, I turned Meeko around and we walked in the opposite direction. Down the path we came to a foot bridge where a little stream trickles and gurgles over the rocks. No, it wasn't frozen and the magical sound was music to my ears. Right there, Meeko saw two squirrels playing squirrel tag. He pranced, but didn't offer to chase them. He knows that chasing creatures of any kind is not allowed, though sometimes, just like everyone, he'd like to break those rules. When the squirrels disappeared, we continued on our way. Meeko wasn't done investigating yet. He is the nosey type and has to know everything that is going on in the neighbourhood. He did his business when he found the perfect spot, and, after using the pooper scooper (a plastic bag), we decided to head for home. We trudged up the hill laden with snow. (Now, I must be honest here. I trudged, Meeko was frisky and wanted to run. He's young at 4 years old. I'm not old, but I'm not as young as he is.) Just as we got to the top, I heard a sound that made me ecstatic. I looked up. Above us was a flock of about 15 Canada Geese, making their way north, which means spring is on the way. Yippee!!!
