Cool Stuff About Canada’s Native Peoples


* That in Canada we celebrate National Aboriginal Day on June 21st? It is an occasion for Canadians to celebrate the contributions that Native Peoples have made to Canada.

*Canadian Indians left behind rock paintings that enable us to learn more about their culture.

Author's Note:

Not all of these examples are limited to Canadian Natives. For instance, the Natives of the Great Plains in the United States also hunted buffalo. These animals were very important to the survival of Natives of the Plains in both countries. The used bones for making tools and weapons, ligaments for making bow strings, hides for blankets, tepees and clothing. These are just some examples of how important the buffalo were to these people.

When Europeans came to North America, they hunted the buffalo almost into extinction. The Native Peoples began to die because there were no longer any buffalo to hunt.
