This week we're going to learn some cool stuff about Canada's Native Peoples. These are fast facts that will help you learn more about Native culture and the contributions that Natives have made to Canada and the world.
* That Canada's aboriginal people used olefin hydrocarbons and methane to make petroleum jelly? (Vaseline) They used it to moisten and protect the skin of humans and animals. * That corn was grown by Canadian Natives? It was a staple (basic) food. They grew it for thousands of years before the first Europeans came to this country. Today, corn is grown in almost every country in the world. * That the canoe was invented by the aboriginal people of Canada? It was first made of birchbark and pitch. The canoes of Native Peoples varied in size according to their needs. Natives who lived on both the east and west coasts of Canada usually made large canoes that were suitable for ocean travel. Today, people all over the world enjoy canoeing, thanks to the inventive minds of these people. * That Native Peoples who lived in the northern part of Canada invented snow goggles? They made them out of ivory, bone and antlers to prevent snow-blindness. * That Native Peoples of Canada discovered the first chewing gum? They collected it from spruce trees and chewed it for pleasure. * That Canadian Native Peoples made a tea from the blackberry plant? They used it to treat upset stomachs, diarrhea and cholera. (an infection caused by drinking water or eating food that was contaminated.) * That Canadian Natives invented several different kinds of snowshoes? The most common kind was made of wood from the spruce tree and were fastened with rawhide strips. * That Natives invented the game of lacrosse, which is a team sport? * That Natives made the first Vitamin C tonic? It was made from the needles and bark of hemlock or pine trees. They were boiled in water to make the tonic. It was a cure for scurvy. (a condition caused by not eating enough fruits and vegetables.) * That Canadian Natives used pine trees to make a tea to cure coughs? Many of today's cough medicines still have pine as an ingredient. * That Canadian Natives who lived on the Plains hunted buffalo for food, clothing and shelters? They used every part of the buffalo. Nothing was wasted. * That Canadian Natives often fought amongst themselves for control over hunting grounds? The Iroquois and Huron tribes were fierce enemies.
