The Oregon State Park and Recreation Department make camping fun and easy. If you have no means to camp, try renting a Yurt, houseboat, cabin, teepee or - believe it or not - a covered wagon to camp in! Yurts are round domed structures with mud covered looking walls - actually canvas. They have a furnace, electricity, and beds, with picnic table and fire ring just off the patio. I must admit, I've never been "Yurt camping," but it sounds like fun. Hey, it might be addictive!

If you like inland waters, try Detroit Lake State Park in the lovely Willamette Valley. Located about 50 miles east of Salem, on State Hwy 22, Detroit Lake is a real fisherman's lake. We spent two nights camping with full hookups and mind-blowing scenic views - got to see Smokey the Bear too! Despite the campground being full to overflowing, everyone was courteous, well behaved and surprisingly quiet after quite time. If you enjoy boating, this is the place.

Oregon State Park camping reservations are available by calling Reservations Northwest at 1-800-452-5687. Try visiting the official state web site at Oregon State Park and Recreation Department and check out the entertaining and extensive information provided at the Oregon On-line Highways web site.

Pam and I just spent about a month driving through and camping in California, Oregon and Washington. (I wish we had had more time!) All three states are fabulous camping adventures, but Oregon's state parks impressed me the most. This was not our first experience with Oregon parks, and it won't be our last. They are so well managed and so beautiful it makes me wonder why can't all our states' park systems be this nice?

Where do you want to camp tonight?
