To paraphrase an old Kentucky saw, spring has sprung, the grass has rize, I wonder where the campers is? We are out there and we are nipping at the bit. Unless you're a full-timer or a daring winter camper, your wait is over. 'Tis the season when stirrings move the mind to thoughts of the great outdoors.
Ah yes, the smell of it! The sweet fragrance of pine, the woods, the pungent aroma of a campfire, and the salty scent of the air blowing off the ocean; these are olfactory stimuli rife with memories. Fellow campers awaken! A new camping season awaits. Springtime is the bestest time of year to go camping. All of nature smells, feels, and looks like new. A rebirth, if you will. Rivers and streams flow full and fresh while rapids churn and spray. Tree branches are swollen-ready to burst with new leaves. At higher elevations, patches of snow may be found hiding in the shade. But, don't plan on going too soon, unless you don't mind experiencing a late winter storm or extra cold nights. Spring, of course, brings lots of rain to most regions of America, so you gotta be prepared. If you're tent camping, let me say from experience, have your foul weather gear at hand. Despite this, spring is a great time to go camping. Where you plan on camping, however, should be given some forethought. Springtime camping ventures often involve a drive outside the local area where climate conditions differ. A trip we took to beautiful Yellowstone National Park one June gave us a surprise. It was not only very cool, snow fell on our cookout one day. We were camping in a tent trailer without furnace. We did have a Coleman heater - thank goodness. Another July, we nearly got washed out of our tent. The wife bailed us out using an empty coffee can as a shovel. Whatta gal! While on a spring camping trip to Canada, the wife and I experienced some very cold damp weather with chilly winds to boot. The grandeur and beauty of Banff National Park made it all well worth it. Only a short drive away is Jasper National Park and the Columbia Icefield . The Icefield Parkway is one of the most beautiful drives in North America. When you add the bear and moose we came by, our vacation videos were out of this world. Go To Page: 1 2
