Fall Camping at Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity NRA, California
The Shasta Lake Unit of the NRA is located east of Trinity Lake and about 30 miles south of the town of Mt. Shasta. The multi-armed lake straddles Interstate 5. Shasta is actually three lakes in one: the Sacramento Arm—west of I-5, the McCloud River Arm—east of the Interstate, and the Pit and Squaw Creek Arms at its eastern reaches. This too is a gorgeous area with lots of old growth pines, oak and manzanita, however, it draws more visitors and is more crowded. Water based recreation is, of course, the name of the game in the Shasta Lake area. There is plenty to be had. Marinas, boat ramps, small campgrounds and picnic areas dot the lakes convoluted shoreline. There are excellent trails in this section as well as off-road four wheeling and biking. Some very nice private marinas/RV parks provide first-class amenities. Antlers RV Park and Campground, near Lakehead, Ca.on the Sacramento Arm, has 66 full hookup sites, a pool, boating and more. The Holiday Harbor Resort and Marina provides 27 nice full-service sites, a nature trail, store and cafĂ©—to name a few of its facilities. Another great RV park with plenty to do and shady full-service campsites is the Bear Mountain RV Resort. These are but a few of the private parks available in this area. Northern California is indeed a wonderland of scenic beauty and outdoors adventures. Lassen National Park and Forest lies southeast of the Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity NRA, and the Humboldt Redwoods Park is off of US 101 near the coast. Many of the areas small towns are rich with the history of California’s gold rush days. Whatever your personal outdoors preferences may be, Northern California has plenty from which to choose! Where do you want to camp tonight?
