Camping Trips 2000 : South-Central Kentucky, the Cumberland

Cumberland River
Daniel Boone National Forest

Daniel Boone National Forest begins west of I-75 at the Kentucky-Tennessee border and runs northwest, terminating north of I-64 and the city of Morehead in eastern Kentucky. It is comprised of six large ranger districts and covers over 693,000 acres of mountainous and heavily forested land. This is the old stomping ground of the famous pioneer Daniel Boone. It is rugged country. A land of fabulous forest, lakes, rivers, streams, cliffs, steep hills, hollows and an abundance of wildlife. A land of lush green in summer and a plethora of brilliant color in autumn. A place that frees the soul and allows the spirit to soar!

While the Redbird Ranger District is a large isolated parcel to the east, the Cumberland River flows through only the London and Somerset Districts. There is a wealth of outdoor recreational activities in these sections. If fishing or hiking is your passion, the Daniel Boone National Forest will accommodate the most burning desires. The acclaimed Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail runs the length of the forest (269 miles). Sheltowee is the name given Daniel Boone by the Shawnee Nation.

There are many campgrounds scattered throughout the national forest. The Somerset District provides five campgrounds and the London District has eight. RV’s are allowed in a few of these, but most campgrounds have minimal facilities.

Lake Cumberland State Resort Park

Covering over 50,000 acres—with over 1255 miles of shoreline—Lake Cumberland is a boating and fishing paradise. Located about 45 miles west of Somerset and 10 miles south of Jamestown (off US 127), Lake Cumberland State Resort Park offers something to suit everyone’s tastes. There is Lure Lodge’s indoor pool, hot tub and exercise room plus horseback riding over nature trails. The real center of enjoyment, however, is the beautiful multi-fingered Lake Cumberland. Trapped by Wolf Creek Dam, the Cumberland River spreads tentacles into the hollows of Kentucky’s declivitous green hills—creating an Eden for water sports enthusiasts. The state provides a large marina in the park, and there are a number of private marinas in Russell County.

Lake Cumberland State Resort Park maintains an outstanding 147-site campground. Most sites are large and have water and electric hookups. The campground has two dump stations, laundry, playground and two shower houses. Camping loops are widely spaced and interior roads are excellent.
