Camping 99 Destination Series: Michigan's Magnificent Outdoors!

Isle Royale National Park is an island located in western Lake Superior. The island is a preserve with a gorgeous wilderness. The park does offer hiking and minimal-impact camping at a large number of overnight campgrounds. (See the above Isle Royale link for travel to the island.) Keweenaw National Historical Park is located in the northeastern UP and commemorates the important copper mining history of the area. No camping is available at the park; however, there are many campgrounds in the region.

Michigan's State and National Forests

Michigan enjoys 3.9 million acres of land in her six fabulous State Forests, each peninsula claiming three. Together, the State Forests provide 150 campgrounds, 7,000 miles of canoeable streams, 600 miles of trails and 13,000 miles of trout waters (Could this be Eden?)!

Four National Forests are contained within her borders: Hiawatha, located on the central-eastern UP, Huron-Manistee in northern LP, and Ottawa National Forest in the western UP. These magnificent forests provide outdoor recreation of all types, many nice campgrounds and millions of acres of unspoiled wilderness.
