Camping by a Lake: A Sweet Outdoors Duet!

The State of Minnesota, as you may know, is known as the "land of ten-thousand lakes." Beautiful lakes-or so they tell me. I wouldn't know first hand. The wife and I love to camp near a lake, and we have camped on some very lovely lakes, but not in Minnesota! We have had but one opportunity to travel across that great state. To our disappointment, the weather was so nasty that we decided to just drive through. We had plans to take in a few of those ten thousand lakes and were looking forward to the experience. Just rotten timing I suppose. Oh well, hopefully we'll have another chance before we get too old to drive! Never the less, Pam and I have camped on some fantastic lakes in our travels. Some no doubt, as nice as Minnesota's.

Camping Between the Lakes

Camping on a beautiful lakeshore is an inspiring outdoors experience. In south western Kentucky, there is actually a "Land Between the Lakes." Approximately seven miles wide and forty miles long, this inland peninsula is anchored in Tennessee. The waters of Kentucky Lake, on the west, and Lake Barkley to the east surround it. Lake Barkley is formed from the Cumberland River and Kentucky Lake from the Tennessee River. If you enjoy boating, fishing, water skiing, swimming or camping, this gorgeous area is the place to be. We tent camped at Hillman Ferry Campground on the northern peninsula and enjoyed the scenic Kentucky Lake. There are four other National Park campgrounds along Land Between the Lakes-one of which is a horse campground (Wranglers Campground). Lake Barkley State Resort Park is east of the peninsula while Kenlake State Resort Park is on the western shore of Kentucky Lake. From wildlife viewing to visiting the 1850's farm, there are many things to see and do. Being a Kentuckian myself, this wonderland of lakes and camping facilities does me proud! (Eat your heart out Minnesota.)

Arkansas Camping Lakes

Arkansas has a couple of great campground lakes that we have especially enjoyed. Petit Jean State Park is a small park with a small lake (Lake Bailey) that offers unforgettable attractions. Located about 75 miles northwest of Little Rock, it overlooks the Arkansas River Valley and has a 127 class "A" site campground. Our spacious site was right on Lake Bailey's beautiful shoreline. Fishing is said to be outstanding. We hiked a few of the trails, enjoyed the 95-foot waterfall and just absorbed Petit Jean's scenic beauty. Lakeside camping couldn't be any better than here.
