With this holiday season complete, my wandering mind conjures up memories of camping trips past. These drab and cold January days bring on yearnings for nicer weather and are ideal for reminiscing. Why certain experiences stick in the mind while others - often more pleasant - don't, I'll never know! But, it is fun to think back over the years and chuckle (or groan) about these peculiar experiences. Camping has a way of creating "remember whens," and most campers are eager to share them.
I remember when we had to hold Fred under the campground cold water faucet to cool him down. Fred was our weird Toy Fox Terrier; his tongue would turn dark purple when he overheated. We were tent camping at Fort Fisher in Waco, Texas, on the Brazos River, and the day was so hot and humid we all nearly stroked out! After cooling ole Fred down, I decided to go for a nice cold shower. In my haste, I forgot my towel. While drying off (with shower room paper towels), a camper walked in on me. I could tell he didn't expect what he saw! I just said hello and finished drying. Embarrassing? You bet - and very memorable! A Slippery Road Then there was the night we camped at Curt Gowdy State Park, Wyoming. It's a beautiful park set around two reservoirs above Cheyenne. What I remember most, however, is our sideways slide down the gravel access road to the lake - with our 22-ft. trailer in tow! Very scary going, that ride. Thank God for low gear! Finding all the campsites occupied and nowhere to turn the rig around was the proverbial cherry on the sundae. With help, we managed to get back up that slippery hill and find a good site. Once settled in, we enjoyed a great evening of camping - on the hill above the reservoir, I might add. Utah Stampede Utah has some very scenic back roads. The State Highways are well maintained, and we always look forward to an entertaining and unique drive. BUT, being caught in the middle of a cattle drive was not the entertainment we expected! I remember that we were enjoying a serene drive south on Highway 89, enroute to Bryce Canyon National Park. Then, out of nowhere, a herd of cattle came storming down the road, surrounding our vehicle and trailer! We really got nervous when a big bull decided to get amorous with his sweetheart at our front bumper. Luckily, a cowboy on horseback and twirling a lasso saved our day. Now that was a definite "remember when"! I'll never forget the big-eyed look of our beagles in the back seat!
