Waldo and Dudley: Camping Beagles Extraordinary

© Thomas Stephens Sr.

Beagles make for great camping dogs! Our two chubby beagle boys have been camping with us since pups and would rather camp than eat ( I lie!). Snoopy boy-eat your heart out! Poor ole snoop' rarely gets to go camping unless it's with Woodstock's scout troop, but our boys are real campground hounds. Oh, the beagle tales that I can tell! It's a good thing Waldo and Dudley can't read.

Beagle Camping Attire

Most camping folks wear camping clothes-and the boys are no different. My wife Pam bought a number of colorful kerchiefs at Wall Drug Store in Wall, South Dakota a few years ago. You name it, Wall Drug carries it! The day we leave on a camping trip, Pam puts their scarves on them. Once around their necks, Waldo and Dudley know its camping time! She changes the kerchiefs daily for, as you know camping is dirty business. Most people we meet offer compliments, but a lady on our last trip asked, "What's those rags tied around their necks for?" We had some very hurt beagle feelings to contend with!

Mississippi Rabbit

Before getting these guys, we had never owned a beagle; their hunting instincts and behaviors were a surprise for us. Waldo went on his first big camping trek at about six months old. We named that trip across the U.S. "When the Beagle meets the Eagle." Yep, we name our camping treks-makes them more personable! Towing our pop-up east across Texas, in a rainstorm, we camped for the night at Askew's Landing Campground. Just off I-20, Askew's is a picturesque private campground on the edge of a thick pine forest with the sites surrounding their small fishing lake. That evening the rain suddenly stopped and the sun came out of hiding, making the evening most lovely. Waldo bounded across the wet clover field in chase of his ball. Water sprayed from the grass as his galloping paws struck the ground. Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a fat rabbit-watching us from the forest's edge. Waldo never saw it, thank God! If he had, we might still be there looking for him in that dense forest. No more running free for Waldo. He now fetches his ball tied on a long rope!

Beagle Woes

Oh yes, we have had our problems traveling and camping with these beagles, and we have had to make accommodations. Beagles under a year will eat and/or chew up anything if left alone-I say anything! Dudley once ate a pop can and chewed halfway through our seat belts. Father Waldo ate my favorite camping cap one morning while we showered. Despite Waldo's disdain for getting wet, he had to accompany me into the shower a few times. This was preferable to having our car or tent-trailer eaten!
