Dutch Oven Cooking on the Internet

If you've been reading Camp and Outdoor Cooking since its inception, you know my passion for Dutch oven cooking. It's fun, and it's an adventuresome way to prepare delicious outdoor meals.

The problem for rising Dutch oven cooks is this: Where do you find quality information? Although scores of cookbooks are published each day, few are devoted to Dutch ovens. So what's a Dutch oven cook to do?

The answer lies in the Internet. Whether you're searching for instructions on seasoning a brand-new Dutch oven or looking to put new life in an old rusty oven, you'll find the answer on the World Wide Web. You'll find everything you need: Web Sites that sell quality cast iron cookware, recipes and cooking instructions, and up-to-date Dutch oven cookbooks.

How-to and recipe sites

Although there aren't that many Dutch oven how-to sites in the Internet, those that do exist provide good, basic information on the basics. You'll find what you need to select the right oven, to select the right oven for your recipe,

Where to locate Dutch oven cookware

Good Dutch oven cookware is hard to find, especially if you live away from the larger metropolitan areas. I'm fortunate because Placerville Hardware in Placerville, Calif. and Home and Farm Kitchen Supply in Jackson, Calif. each offer a fair selection of Lodge cast iron cookware. But when I need accessories, like a sturdy Dutch oven table, I turn to the Internet.

Dutch oven classes

Don't feel like teaching yourself to cook in cast iron? Do you learn better under the watchful eye of an experienced instructor? There are several community-based teaching programs that you can turn to. If you don't like within driving range of one of these classes, check with your local municipal recreation department -- many offer classes at reasonable rates.

Message boards and chat rooms

Do you like to bounce ideas off experienced Dutch oven cooks? Message boards and chat rooms are a valuable source of information, especially if you're that patient sort. Some of these boards don't get a lot of traffic. But, don't fret -- a few Suite101.com members like Kingsford1 stand ready to answer your questions.
