It's summer and time for Greenwood Ridge Vineyard's annual competition for best palate. For those not yet ready to put their taste on the line, there are chocolate tastings and cheese tastings as well.
Greenwood Ridge Vineyards is located on a lovely ridgetop overlooking Anderson Valley in Mendocino County, about two hours' drive north of San Francisco. The winery, operated by Allan Green, is a dependable producer of first rate Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Zinfandel, and Sauvignon Blanc. Their wines are not in great supply and definitely worth seeking out. Every time we've placed a Greenwood Ridge wine into blind competition it showed very well and was, in every instance, considered one of the best values in the lineup. The wine tasting competition does not feature Greenwood Ridge wines. The wines are single varietal examples from fine producers all over the State. Contestants are asked only to identify the varietal. Contestants are given eight wines to identify and a time limit of four minutes for each. You can enter as a novice, an amateur, or a professional; as a single competitor or paired up for the doubles division. Novice winners and all second and third place finishers win prizes of fine local wines; and everyone who reaches the finals will receive a personalized certificate. First place winners in both singles and doubles divisions, amateur and professional classes, win certificates for dining or lodging at distinguished local establishments. Advance registration fees are $25 (single) and $40 (double). Guests of contestants are admitted without charge. You must register by July 18 to enjoy these rates. Young or old, spectator or contestant, all are welcome. Enjoy the wine - the food -the laughter! For more information, contact Greenwood Ridge Vineyards, 5501 Highway 128, Philo, CA 95466.
