Mugsy: A Dog's Dogdachshunds, they’re almost always feisty little dogs. Mugsy would bark ferociously at anyone who entered our home and even snap at children, who only wanted to pet him. I think it was a combination of blindness and old age that mellowed him to the point where little ones were even safe to pet him recently. Even Mugsy’s recent illness was typical. He suddenly quit eating and we rushed him to the vet where he was immediately put on IV fluids and other intravenous medications. For six days, Mugsy was on death’s doorstep until he miraculously improved. Dr. Kendra Mumford at Orchard Veterinary Hospital, called us with the good news that he was eating a bit and even throwing his food dish around wanting more. We happily brought him home, but he relapsed and didn’t eat for three days. We knew that he was telling us it was time to let go. I guess his obstinance came through one last time in that he got better because he wanted to come home one last time. Dr. Mumford may have said it best, describing Mugsy as “ a cute old guy, full of stubborn sweetness.” Since this is a garden column, suffice it to say that Mugsy certainly would have made lemonade out of those sour old lemons. Really great lemonade. We’ll miss you, Mugs.
