The deer and doe garden statues had been a Christmas present from some of the Weidles' 11 children, said daughter, Sylvia Debold. "It was unbelievable," Debold said. "Never in our wildest imagination did we think it would ever save her life." Bessie seems to have taken to her new-found fame well. She received $500 plus expenses for her segment on the Letterman show. Yet, through it all, she would have preferred it never to have happened. Said Bessie; "All I can say is I'm glad the deer were there. At least I'm here to talk about it." Bessie plans to replace the deer, too. "You never know when another car is going to come crashing into your home," she said. In the meantime, Bessie and Edgar have taken to sleeping upstairs.
