Did you know that during the 10 years of the Vietnam War, 58,000 American men and women died? During that same 10-year period, 330,000 women in America died of breast cancer. This year some 180,200 Americans will be diagnosed with breast cancer -- almost 500 a day!
And that's why I'm proud to announce that Goldsmith Seeds, Inc., one of the world's largest wholesale hybridizers of flower seeds, will be raising funds for breast cancer research during a nationwide campaign the entire month of May. Home gardeners across America will have the opportunity to buy an exclusive collection of "Accent" impatiens from Goldsmith Seeds -- and support breast cancer research for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. "Memories, Milestones & Miracles" is the name of the campaign, which is jointly sponsored by Ladies' Home Journal magazine. The impatiens' collection, dubbed the "Accent Miracle Collection," will only be sold in two distinct containers at participating garden centers across North America during May. Home gardeners who purchase either of the impatiens-filled containers will receive free a sparkling pink, ribbon-shaped Swarovski crystal pin symbolizing breast cancer awareness. The "Accent Miracle Collection" features a special mixture of three pink shades of impatiens, which coordinates the pink breast cancer awareness symbol. The two containers they will be sold in are a 12-inch hanging basket or a 15-inch European ceramic planter box. "We believe this campaign will spearhead a new thinking among progressive leaders in the horticulture industry," says Joel Goldsmith, president of Goldsmith Seeds, Inc., which is headquartered in Gilroy, California. "And, more importantly, proceeds will directly benefit breast cancer research." Also unique is the fact that everyone involved in the campaign -- from the seed suppliers, growers, container and plant tag manufacturers to the garden centers -- will donate proceeds to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The Komen Foundation was selected, in part, because its administrative costs are a staggeringly low 6-percent. It is the nation's largest private funder of research dedicated solely to breast cancer, and annually sponsors Race for the Cure in 77 cities nationwide with more than 400,000 participants. If there's one downfall to the campaign, it's that not every garden center owner decided to participate. While there are participating garden centers in most metropolitan areas and most states, home gardeners may sometimes have to look closely or drive some distance to find a participant. A story and complete list of participating garden centers is listed in the May issue of Ladies' Home Journal magazine. Go To Page: 1 2
