Flowering crab apples (Malus) are admired for their fragrant single or double blossoms, which may be white, rosy-pink, burgundy or deep reddish violet. Even these ornamental versions bear small fruits (usually 2 inches or less in diameter). Most varieties produce edible fruits that can be
used for jelly or butter.
Other spring-flowering trees include magnolias, the Eastern redbud, dogwoods and ornamental pears.
