New Flowers from Goldsmith Seeds

Looking for something difefrent when it comes to bedding plants? Goldsmith Seeds, a wholesale flower hybridizer in Gilroy, California, is unveiling 18 new flowers for the year 2000-2001. They include a dark-leafed impatiens, a black-flowered pansy and a new hybrid dianthus series.

Goldsmith Seeds, still family owned and operated, is a multi-national company with more than 4,000 employees on three continents. All these introductions are currently available at retail nurseries around the world.

Home gardeners must shop for these new releases by variety name. Most will be available as already-started transplants in packs at nurseries. However, seeds will be available from mail-order seed companies.

Goldsmith Seeds President Joel Goldsmith says of the introductions, "Our plant breeding team continues to the the best and largest in the flower business. We are proud to introduce new and innovative bedding plants to the world. These new flowers should become mainstays to the gardening public."

"Accent" impatiens "Accent Midnight Rose" is the first dark-leafed variety in the impatiens series, which totals 26 separate colors. Being dark-leafed, this variety will tolerate more sun than most impatiens. All "Accent" impatiens bloom all summer until heavy frosts atop plants 10-12 inches high.

"Super Parfait" dianthus Whether you know them as dianthus, sweet William, border carnations or "pinks," many home gardeners overlook the advantages and versatility of these bedding plants. "Super Parfait" diatnhus features large, 2-inch fringed flowers in strawberry and raspberry colors. Plants grow 8-10 inches high in cool weather. In mild-winter climates, they can be grown year-round.

"Accord" pansy Except for black spot on roses, black gets little attention in the garden...until now. "Accord Black Beauty" is the first black pansy from Goldsmith. Two other new "Accord" colors include "Accord Clear Purple" and "Accord Purple Picotee." All three new colors have a yellow center, and grow on plants 6-8 inches high.

"Libre" primula obconica "Libre" continues to be primin-free and hypo-allergenic, eliminating the possibility of skin irritation. The three releases are all red shades: "Libre Carmine," "Libre Red" and "Libre Fuchsia." All bloom in cool weather on dwarf plants, ideal for containers.

"Penny" viola Hybrid vigor, performance, uniformity and unique colors are what "Penny" violas are about. Two new colors include "Penny Porcelian," a soft mid-blue, and "Penny Yellow Jump-up," with upper petals of deep violet and lower petals of golden yellow. All "Penny" violas do best in cool weather, and are dwarf plants.

"Saratoga" nicotiana This old-fashioned favorite was bred for the first time by Goldsmith Seeds last year. Now, two new colors join the seven-color series. "Saratoga Appleblossom" is a soft pink and "Saratoga Rose" is a bright rose. Both additions grow on bushy plants 10-12 inches high, with trumpet-shaped flowers. An added benefit is fragance at night or on cloudy days.
