Checkers has been around a long time -a very long time - a form of the game that we know today as checkers was brought over to Europe from Egypt probably around the 1500's according to
the American Checker Federation . The AFC web site is definitely a haven for Checkers Enthusiasts (http://www.acfcheckers.com ) . They can answer your questions about the origins of checkers as well as listings for tournaments, rules, and other variations of checkers worldwide.
Checkerboard Cakes obviously were fashioned after the design of the checkerboard from the board game Checkers. They are a nice design alternative to Marble cake .They have a interesting design with great visual effect . You don’t have to limit yourself to the basic color combination of white and chocolate or yellow and chocolate cake. I thought of some variations that you might consider for different occasion cakes: Baby Shower:Why not do a pink and white or blue and white or pink and blue combo? Check out this variation - a “Battenburg Cake”. The best way to describe this is like a giant petite four - with a pink and white “checkerboard” look . Recipe at: http://www.cakerecipe.com/az/battenburgc... Favorite Team or School Colors: Most teams and Schools have two colors - why not do a checkerboard design with their theme colors? Christmas: Red and Green Checkerboard Halloween: Orange and Black Checkerboard There are Checker Board Pan Sets that you can purchase - such as these: http://www.sugarcraft.com/catalog/pans/p... http://store.yahoo.com/doughmakerstore/c... The Pan Set is made up of circular dividers that are inserted into the pans themselves. This is so you can easily pour two different-colored batters into alternating compartments, so that when you assemble the cake you will have a checker board design displayed as you cut each slice of cake. See an example of this design and a recipe at: at:http://www.wilton.com/ri/misc/checker.ht... The cake has a checkerboard design as well as the decorated cake top which displays a checker board game. If you don’t have the Pan Set then try this method at Joy of Baking - which I really like. It suggests using a filled pastry bag to “pipe” the alternate colored cake batters to form your rings. http://www.joyofbaking.com/Checkerboard.... There is also a recipe for a ganache glaze that is to be used between the layers as not to disturb the visual effect.
