Father's Day Origins and Cake IdeasFather’s Day has its origins in Spokane, Washington, starting in 1909. While listening to a sermon concerning Mother’s Day, Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea of a day to honor fathers. She had been raised by a single parent, her widowed father, and was very appreciative of all that he had done for her. Her father was born in June so she chose to hold the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane on June 19, 1910. In 1924 this celebration for fathers gained national attention and observance when President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day.
