Despite the heartbreaking situations caused by terrorists who hate us, Americans have shown remarkable strength of character and admirable courage. Although there is unprecedented sadness for the victims and their loved ones, a renewed sense of purpose can be felt throughout our country.
Like other parts of the United States, there are visible symbols of sincere patriotism and unselfish acts of humanitarianism among the many small communities of Acadiana. Cajun people are by nature very caring and willing to help, so it is not surprising to witness their response to those in need.
While the nation is at war, and although the WTC site is a grim memorial, there is room for some enjoyment of life. Indeed, Americans should honor those lost not only with grief and sympathy but also with appreciation and fond memories. Let us sincerely count our blessings at Thanksgiving and pledge to pass the positive traditions on to future generations.
So on a lighter note, we remember to give thanks for the good things. And Cajuns realize they have much to be thankful for:
South Louisiana's autumn is bright and beautiful.
A houseful of relatives maketh joyful noise.
Thanksgiving "dinner" is served at lunch time or mid-afternoon.
The turkey is likely to be deep-fried instead of dry-baked.
There are as many desserts as "salty food" to choose from.
The "kids" are served at tables separate from the adults.
Sugar cane harvest season is almost over.
Crayfish season is almost here.
Uncle Paul has a fresh batch of Boudreaux/Thibodeaux jokes.
Good food, music, dance, and love of life ... Cajun culture has all that and American pride too.
