Keep in mind when determining watering schedules, that a plants needs will increase if they are in hot conditions. Type of containers will also affect watering schedules. Clay pots will usually dry out faster than plastic, and large pots stay wet longer than small. Whichever type of container you prefer, it should ALWAYS have drainage holes. The quickest way to kill a succulent is to leave its feet soaking! When you do water, you should also be sure to water through. This helps ensure healthy roots, and helps prevent pests such as root mealies. FERTILISER Miracle Gro, or a similar product, usually works well. These products should be used at quarter strength, 2 or 3 times during the growing season. There are also specialised Cacti fertilisers available from many nurseries, and from the Cactus & Succulent Society of America. If you are uncomfortable with either of these options, find a low nitrogen fertiliser (5-10-10). SOIL Soil is probably the most contentious subject amongst growers. Most people create their own blend from materials locally available. The most important thing to remember is that excellent drainage is an absolute must. If using a commercial mix, drainage material will almost always be necessary. Marina Welham, editor of the Amateur's Digest, recommends testing soil by squeezing a handful of the mix. If it falls apart, it's all right, if not, more drainage material needs to be added. Sharp sand, course grit, or perlite can be used, depending on personal preference and availability. If you would like more specific advice on soil, including some specific recipes, see Cacti_etc's soil FAQ, at http://www.hpl.hp.com/botany/public_html... Bear in mind, that this information is offered as general advice, and you will probably have to adjust your care to your own plants and conditions. There is a great deal of debate over cultivation techniques, but the right answer is what works for your plants. If you have questions about a particular plant, or if you have something you'd like to add (or dispute) please join the discussion, I'd love to here your opinions, or personal experiences!
