Other light pruning was done on a variety of our trees, shrubs and vines: Daphne, candytuft, Japanese wisteria, honeysuckle, flowering cherry tree, the butterfly bushes (buddleia), clematis, arborvitae trees, spirea, and flowering almond. And then there were our roses to prune: Queen Elizabeth, Fragrant Cloud, Chicago Peace and Peace, Heritage Pink, Double Delight, Amber Queen, Amalia (named after my mother, I'm sure!), Las Vegas, Pink Simplicity hedge roses, and several varieties of climbing roses.

The hummingbird feeders have been taken down, cleaned and stored for the winter. Since it's been weeks since we've seen any coming to dine, I'm sure they're already enjoying the nectar they need at the summer resort of their choice. My gardening tools, my gloves and well-worn gardening Reeboks are resting on their respective shelves where they'll remain untouched until spring.

It's that time of year once again . . . my garden is quiescent . . . asleep for another season. Another summer has passed and fall is bursting all around us with her own special colors . . . winter in our little corner of the world is not far behind.
