Flowering Vine Arbors to Attract Hummingbirds!

humid weather that summer brings and they are fairly easy to maintain. Many varieties need little or no deadheading (a big plus for me!), and not too many are terribly prone to diseases. Training them to climb up a trellis or an arbor is easily accomplished and should be done early on. For this task, use either narrow gardening "tape" that can be readily found at your local garden center, or a light twine or string to attach the tendrils of the vines to your arbor or trellis.

There are also many varieties of flowering vines that don't attract noxious insects. This is a big plus, since it is definitely NOT APPROPRIATE to use poisonous chemicals or insecticides to control insects on any flowering plants from which hummingbirds will be imbibing nectar. These poisonous substances will not only kill the noxious ""unwanteds" but can also sicken or even kill your hummers.

Just remember . . . your garden is not only YOUR haven away from the hustle and bustle of your world, but can also be a heavenly haven for your hummers and butterflies. Making it a comfy, safe, and beautiful place for yourself AND your wildlife visitors can be a fulfilling, worthwhile spring project.

Until next time -- keep those hummers a-humming and those "flying flowers" soaring.
