Flowering Vine Arbors to Attract Hummingbirds!for attracting hummingbirds. Their 1-inch blossoms of crimson would definitely catch they eye of any hummingbird passing through, and they are also tubular-shaped -- exactly what hummers love to accommodate their long beaks. I am really intrigued with the beautiful foliage of this vine as well, and can readily picture Cardinal Climbers making their way up both sides and around the top of my arbor. With a growth habit of 15 to 20 feet in one season, this vine would easily cover my arbor by mid-summer. This would be my second choice of vines for this summer's planting. Asarina (Asarina scandens) is touted as an excellent flowering vine for training on arbors or trellises. The striking purple flowers of Asarina vines are great for hummingbirds to sip nectar from, as they sport 1 to 2 inch trumpet-shaped blossoms. If I decided to plant this vine, I would treat it as an annual. Although Asarinas are considered perennials, they are not hardy enough to survive our cold winters here in USDA Zone 6. However, since the hummingbirds in our locale are wise enough to leave before Old Man Winter strikes, the beautiful Asarina blossoms would provide them with sweet nectar until it was time for them to migrate south to warmer climes. Chilean Glory Vines (Eccremocarpus scaber) are a true delight to behold when in full bloom. Their colorful tubular blossoms are terrific for attracting hummingbirds. This vine would also be a superb choice for planting in the containers next to my new arbor. Another stunning flowering vine I could consider is called the Firecracker Vine (Mina lobata). Like the others described, this vine also sports glorious tubular flowers. Their colors range from shades of yellow to deep reds -- another winner for hummingbirds. I can almost see this vine in my mind's eye, hurriedly climbing its way up my arbor with lovely blossoms happily nodding toward passing hummers to come and dine! Yes -- it's going to be a tough decision as to which one I end up selecting to grace my arbor this summer. I'm anxious to get started on my search for the picture perfect flowering vine! Even if you don't have a beautiful arbor like mine (which I received as a Christmas gift from one of my daughters), flowering vines are a great choice for a backyard hummingbird habitat. Most vines love the hot and often humid
