Lilacs serve many purposes in gardens and are wonderful planted as hedges, or screens between neighboring yards. Planted as single specimens, they are great showstoppers in mid-spring when in full bloom. Their fragrant blossoms linger for many weeks and will attract many Swallowtail butterflies to feast on the rich nectar in their blossoms. Sunflowers This species of Sunflowers {Helianthus salicifolius} is a lovely perennial boasting single petals of bright yellow with brown centers. They are excellent for back borders, and Eastern Tiger Swallowtails are very attracted to them. Another popular sunflower is Helianthus annuus, an annual that blooms from mid summer through late fall. Its blossoms come in orange, red, white, and yellow and completely surround their large dark brown-black centers. This variety is excellent for planting against a tall fence or against an otherwise drab wall or building. Tiger Swallowtails love this sunflower for its sweet nectar and also for providing them with a great landing place. Until next time--keep those "flying flowers" flying, and those hummers a-humming!
