It's that time of year again when both hummingbirds and butterflies are seeking out their favorite nectar haunts! Will they find the sweet nectar that they need to survive on in YOUR backyard? Does your backyard garden qualify as a habitat that would attract these enchanting "Jewels of the Sky?"
Whether you're an aspiring butterfly and hummingbird gardener, or you are already enjoying these captivating visitors in your garden, please read on. We will be sharing about how one dedicated gardener has successfully attracted both hummers and butterflies--among other delightful visitors--to her lovely gardens. No. It didn't all happen overnight. You will see that it took time, some in-depth research, much hard work, and a great deal of patience. Our gracious gardener is also sharing with us some fulfilling rewards of her gardening endeavors through several very striking photographs. Capturing some of her garden visitors on film has been a special thrill for her. I am indebted to her for giving me permission to display them in this article. Please join us in an exciting, informative interview with Terri. Terri lives in the beautiful state of Pennsylvania (USDA Zone 6) and is one of many gardening friends I've met on Suite 101. Terri is not only a very loyal reader of my articles, but she is also an enthusiastic contributor to my discussion topics. Terri shares many "pearls of wisdom" about her butterfly and hummingbird gardening with me and other readers in these discussions. Terri, I want to thank you for taking time from your busy life to share your lovely gardens and some of your exciting wildlife visitors with us. I know everyone will be intrigued as they learn about how your dream of creating a true wildlife garden is gradually unfolding for you. How long have you had an interest in butterfly and hummingbird gardening? Or, did it just evolve over a period of time? I have been fascinated by butterflies ever since I was a child. But I never really thought about hummingbirds until I saw some hummers at a neighbor's feeder a few years ago. Did you start your garden from scratch, or was some of it planted when you first moved there? When I first started my garden there was nothing there -- just orange clay and a lot of rocks! We only had enough ground cleared on which to build our house. The rest of our one acre of land was left wooded and natural.
